I’ve been meaning to check out the local scene and I’m getting there slowly one cafe at a time and the next one on the list is The Rusty Owl. Conveniently located right opposite to Mooroolbark Station and in front of the cafe has plenty of parking too so getting there wouldn’t be difficult at all. Walking in we were greeted by lovely staff and you can instantly tell that the customers that come in are regulars and definitely locals.
The dirty chai was quite disappointing. It was very diluted and did not have any oomph at all.
Dirty Chai – $3.80
The nachos came out with a massive dollop of sour cream and guacamole. The thing about nachos that I hate is that only the top layer gets salsa and cheese and yep, this was the deal with this one. There was plenty of sour cream and guac and needed way more salsa and cheese.
Nachos – $12
Corn chips, salsa, melted cheese topped with sour cream & guacamole
For $9 you can get a quiche with chippies on the side which is definitely great value. The quiche was okay, a touch on the dry side and needed a bit more flavour. The chippies had a great crunch but was not seasoned at all.
Spinach & Sun Dried Tomato Quiche with chips- $9
Finally, dessert! The waffle with berries and ice cream were on my mind since walking in. Unfortunately the waffles were quite hard which was a shame.
Waffles with berries and ice cream – $12
I really wanted to love this place, the staff were so friendly and warm but unfortunately the food was a touch disappointing. Sorry The Rusty Owl but I’ll be hooting away.
