Jacques Reymond has always been on my to do list but unfortunately, I never had a chance to. So, I decided to check out his gastropub instead, L’Hotel Gitan located in Prahan. I made a reservation on a Saturday night with Mr D and Miss Pear and boy, does this place get busy! There’s heaps of parking in the front so another thing to not worry about. Anywho, walking in we were greeted by friendly staff and was shown to our table.
We looked over the menu and started our ordering spree. First up, duck liver parfait. It was quite dense and wasn’t as rich in flavour which I’m use to. Would I get this again? Probably not.
Duck Liver Parfait – $14
Next up was the touch larger dish the steak tartare. When this came out, we were greatly disappointed in the size. This was in the moyen section (medium) and it clearly looked like it should have been in the petite section (small). The taste? Well, it was very strong in vinaigrette which overpowered the steak tartare and it wasn’t my cup of tea (or the rest of the table). For $22, the portion and flavour was quite disappointing.
Gitan Steak Tartare – $22
Mr D got the 150g eye fillet cooked medium rare and it was AMAZEBALLS! It was tender, it was succulent, it was cooked perfectly. The chippies on the side were super duper crunchy with a load of seasoning (mmm seasoning!!). Mr D was definitely satisfied with his dish.
Southern Range Le Charme Eye Fillet (150g) – $32
Miss Pear and I got the wild groper and found the groper to be cooked perfectly but needed more seasoning. The tomatoes were AWESOME SAUCE though.
Fragrant Wild Groper – $38
Now, our favourite time of the night, DESSERT!!! Now, word of warning, the desserts here are GINORMOUS! The apple and salted caramel crumble was crumbly, was apple-ly, was sweet (but not too sweet) and the vanilla ice cream gave it a nice freshness.
Apple & Salted Caramel Crumble, Vanilla Ice Cream – $16
The panna cotta was next and this was quite dense and did not jiggle at all (yep, I shook the glass as hard as I could). The mandarin was very refreshing but it was a shame about the panna cotta though.
Panna Cotta – $16
I had very high expectations at L’Hotel Gitan and unfortunately I had a disappointing experience. The staff were superb and were top notch but the food was disappointing. However, if you do decide to come here, definitely get the steak and the apple crumble. Sorry L’Hotel Gitan but I won’t be coming back.
