When Ms Traveling comes back to visit, you’ve gotta make time to have brunch of course! So I was in charge of finding a place and I found Second wife, because well, Mr D might need a second wife after all these brunch dates I was having! Located near the Boxhill hospital, parking was limited but if you do get there early, there’s quite a few parking spots in front of of the cafe. Once you’ve found a spot, snag a table, looked at the snazzy decor and met with your buddies and finally got the menu in front of you, you’re ready to take in Second Wife.
I got a chai latte and had an option of having the powder or the tea leaves chai and got the tea leaves. THIS WAS AMAZEBALL! It was so smooth, so full of chai flavour and I absolutely adored it. I didn’t need any honey / sugar at all.
Chai Latte (leaves) – $4.50
Ms Traveling got the waffles soy vanilla ice cream and other bits and bob. She loved it and didn’t find it overly sweet, still sweet but sweet enough for breakfast.
Chia Buckwheat Waffles – $19
Soy vanilla ice cream, vegan butterscotch reduction, toasted crushed rose walnuts, strawberry and kiwi fruit topped with shaved dark chocolate
Miss Yogi bear got the mexican bowl and substituted the grilled chicken with haloumi. This was also GINORMOUS and she wasn’t able to finish it. It was refreshing, spicy and had so many flavours going on that she couldn’t handle the goodness of it. She absolutely enjoyed it but it was quite heavy with both the quinoa and the brown rice.
Mexican Bowl – $24
Homemade red beans, fresh avocado, cucumber salsa, fresh coriander, organic corn chips, sour cream, shredded cheddar, haloumi served with paprika garlic buttered corn cob finished with lime wedge on a warm bed of quinoa and brown rice
Mr D got the Turkish Lamb burger which came with sweet potato cinnamon crisps. He loved the lamb burger and found that it was flavoursome, not dry at all and just went so well together. He struggled to give me some to try because he liked it so much. He didn’t like the crisps though, would have preferred sweet potato chippies instead. He said he felt like he was just eating the skin and wasn’t at all satisfying.
Turkish Lamb Burger – $16
Homemade grilled Turkish spiced lamb patty served with pickled carrot, fresh radish, cucumber, coriander and mint with kewpie mayo and sriracha on a toasted seeded milk bun with a side of sweet potato cinnamon crisps.
I got the Okonomiyaki with smoked salmon. This was like a pancake full of amazing-ness which you can’t get enough of. All the flavours worked well together and was oh so balanced. The portion was GINORMOUS and I struggled to finish it.
Okonomiyaki – $20
Japanese cabbage pancakes with spring onion layered with smoked salmon, kewpie mayo and a Japanese fruit and veggie reduction topped with a poached egg finished with freeze dried seaweed, straw pickled ginger and katsuobushi flakes
I adored this little cafe and I will definitely come back. The staff were super friendly and very attentive, the service was great and the food, my gosh, the food was AMAZEBALL that everyone on our brunch date loved everything they picked. If you live in Boxhill, make sure to check out this little gem because when people find out about it, you’ll have to queue up for it!
