Gingerboy, Melbourne

The traveling couple had given us a voucher to Gingerboy (been totes wanting to try this out) for our engagement and we decided to cash it in because, well, it was going to expire soon. I’ve been wanting to check this place out for a while and now there wasn’t an excuse as to why we couldn’t go. Gingerboy, as expected is located in a lane way and when you step inside, you’re greeted by smiling faces. We got to our table, got our game face on and waited for the food to come out.

The first dish up was the soy cured ocean trout. I’m a huge fan of fish and this dish did not disappoint. I can safely say with utmost confidence that this was uber AMAZEBALL! That flavour, that sauce, that EVERYTHING. Definitely refreshing.

Soy Cured Ocean Trout – $18
Tumeric, Coconut Caramel, Crisp Potato Noodles

The traveling couple recommended the son in law eggs so of course we just had to get it. These were delightfully oozy so make sure you pop the whole thing in your mouth or else your shirt will love it more. That chili jam wasn’t too spicy but it was a nice added touch to blend the dish together.

Son in Law Eggs (3 pc)- $13.50
Chili jam and asian herbs

Mr D wanted to try the wagyu in la lot (betal leaf) and when they came out, it did look quite appetising. However, I generally like these cooked medium rare and the wagyu was very well done. The sour chili vinegar was on point though.

We got the large sharing dish crispy baby chicken to share and boy, the chicken was MAGNIFICENT. Be warned though, this is a very sour dish so it’s a good thing that it comes with a complimentary jasmine rice. When you eat everything together, it was very droolsworthy.

Crispy Baby Chicken – $38.50
Green prawns and peanut relish, som tum salad

Steamed Jasmine Rice

Finally, we got the Gingerboy dessert share plate because I couldn’t decide which dessert to get (greedy hey?) so I got EVERYTHING. My favourite was the strawberry yuzu, it was both sweet and a touch of citrus. The pandan mousse was not pandan-y enough which was a shame since I was super excited. Mr D absolutely loved the coconut sago with the mango sorbet, it was very refreshing. We weren’t a huge fan of the panna cotta with pineapple, something about the flavour didn’t sit well with us.

Gingerboy Dessert Share Plate – $39.50
Right to Left:
1. Macadamia financier, coconut sago, mango sorbet

2. Coconut cardamom panna cotta, pineapple
3. Black sesame ice cream, pandan mousse, sesame glass
4. Calpico sorbet, lychees, mango and crisp noodles

Gingerboy has a great atmosphere with great staff. The cured ocean trout was oh so awesome sauce and the baby chicken too. However, we did find the price to be a touch on the pricier end and we didn’t find that everything was worth the price tag. If you do drop by, prepared to give your wallet a workout.
