On the busy street of Lygon in Brunswick East sits an Italian Eatery called Da Peppe. Walking in you definitely get a warm vibe and the staff are so friendly that you can’t help but smile when they speak to you. We sat down and was so excited to check out the food.
To start off we got the mixed cold meats and cheese board. With two pieces of cheese and some meats with pickles, it wasn’t a huge variety. It did satisfy the cravings though.
Tagliere Salumi – $27
Mixed cold meat and cheese
Garlic pizza! I absolutely adore garlic bread so when I heard that there’s garlic pizza…count me in boys and girlies! It was super cheesy and garlic-y but the dough was quite dense which was a shame. I like my pizza base to be fluffy and light.
Garlic Pizza (with cheese) – $15
The homemade tortellini were massive and for $25 you get literally 4 pieces. You heard me – FOUR FRIGGING PIECES! They’re stuffed with chicken and porcini mushrooms in a rich creamy boscaiola sauce. The flavour was lovely and rich in porcini. However, the pasta itself was thick and flaky.
Homemade Tortellini – $25
Stuffed with chicken, porcini mushrooms, pinch of curry with Boscaiola sauce
When you see half moon shaped pasta, how could you not get it? These are also frigging GINORMOUS and you only get four pieces. Stuffed with veal, mushroom and eggplant in a cream sauce, it was very VERY VERY rich. Now, I love all kinds of pasta, I don’t pasta discriminate. However, this was not for me. The flavour and texture was not for me. It was mushy and it had a taste which I couldn’t put my finger on, it wasn’t pleasant at all and I wouldn’t recommend this dish. Such a shame since it sounded like such an interesting combo too.
Homemade Mezzelune (Half Moon Shaped Pasta) – $28
Stuffed with veal, chicken, mushroom, eggplant and cooked in radicchio, gorgonzala cream sauce
The homemade umbricelli bolognese needed a lot more seasoning. The pasta was thick and a touch too soft for my liking.
Homemade Umbricelli Bolognese – $23
The umbricelli marinara on the other hand was delish! There were a variety of seafood and overall it wasn’t oily at all. The seasoning on this dish was on point.
Umbricelli Marinara – $29
Homemade pasta like fettuccini with seafood
The homemade beef lasagne needed a whole lot of flavour. There was way more pasta than meat and it needed a whole lot of cheese and bechamel sauce. Definitely not something I’d rush back for.
Homemade Lasagne – $20
The staff were super friendly and it’s a very cosy and homely place. However, the food was a hit and miss and when it was a hit, it was still on the average side. I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately, I wouldn’t be rushing back anytime soon. Sorry Da Peppe.
