Kumo Izakaya & Sake Bar, Brunswick East

Taking full advantage of the half price dining when booking restaurants via The Fork, we decided to meet up for some Japanese at Kumo in Brunswick East. We made a booking and got there smack bang on the dot and we were shown to our table. The interior’s very modern and chic with a great mural on the wall. Now, back to the food.

To start off we got the edamame which was seasoned with black sesame and pink salt. THIS. WAS. THE. BOMB!

Edamame – $4.80
With black sesame & Murray River pink salt

The crunchy octopus bites with kimchi mayo was unfortunately very oily and quite salty. The octopus bites were super crunchy though.

Crunchy Octopus Bites – $12.80
With kimchi mayo, lemon

I’m a sucker for any kinds of dumplings and I defs love myself some gyozas. Unfortunately the steamed pork gyozas were flavourless and the gyoza skin was quite thick.

House made Steamed Pork Gyozas (3pc) – $7.80

The premium assorted sashimi included salmon, tuna, scallop and kingfish. The scallops were very fresh and melted in my mouth. The rest of the fish were quite fresh but nothing spectacular.

Premium Assorted Sashimi (24pc) – $55.80

The Sher Wagyu Tataki with yuzu ponzu was delish! The yuzu ponzu gave it a lovely zing and the wagyu melted in my mouth.

Sher Wagyu Tataki – $16.80
With yuzu ponzu, red onion, chive

For those who love a spicy kick, definitely get the spicy tuna taco. It’s super spicy, quite rich and the taco gave it a nice crunchy texture. Definitely a recommended dish.

Spicy Tuna Taco (2pc) – $15.80
With avrugar caviar, sea spray, lemongrass mayo

The seared hokkaido scallops were very pretty when they came out. However, they were more fried like than seared like and they were very salty and we weren’t able to finish them which was a shame.

Seared Hokkaido Scallops (4pc) – $18.80
With Soy & Butter, Spring Onion, Bonito Flakes

The grilled miso salmon was cooked perfectly. The black garlic and yuan sauce were very intense in flavour and the overall dish was quite salty. If you do get this, be sure to order some rice on the side.

Grilled Miso Salmon – $17.80
With Watermelon Kimchi, Apple Snow, Black Garlic, Yuan Sauce

The night ended with black sesame ice cream and it was quite disappointing. It wasn’t rich and it had a very intense black sesame taste.

Black Sesame Ice Cream – $6.80

Kumo is a very nice venue on a busy road. However, the service was quite slow and the staff weren’t attentive which was a shame. The menu is more of a Japanese fusion so take note if you’re looking for traditional Japanese. The food was on the salty side and if I had to pay full price instead of the 50% off, I would be quite upset with the quality of the food. Sorry Kumo but I won’t be returning anytime soon.
