Stop 17 is the newest addition to the Fitzroy cafe scene (you also get off at tram stop 17 as well!). Big deal, I hear you say. Sure we have heaps of cafes everywhere but what makes this one special is that upstairs there’s a writer’s room. What’s a writer’s room? It’s a room where you can study / write / contemplate about life and you won’t get rushed out or disturbed unless you want to be. Also, they have BREAKFAST ALL FREAKING DAY!! Let the brunch adventure begin at Stop 17!
When you step inside, there’s a rustic and homely feeling about the place which means you feel welcomed and oh so comfortable.
We headed upstairs to check out the writer’s room and it was so adorable!
The inspirations of the writer’s room – Quentin Tarantino, JK Rowling and Steven King. All painted by local artists in the community (such a tight-knit community).
After exploring both levels, we settled out tooshies back into the chairs to begin BRUNCH!! I got the chai latte (such a sucker for chai!) and it came out beautifully presented. The chai latte was smooth and creamy and the honey gave it a nice sweetness, just the way I like it. However, the honey was placed in tea strainer’s drip bowl which is cute but once I strained my chai latte, I had no where to put the strainer. Perhaps the honey could come in a little cup on it’s own instead.

Mumsy bear got her all time favourite, cappuccino. This was so aromatic and so smooth. The coffees here are locally blended by Phoenix Coffee Group to incorporate the taste of Fitzroy (you can taste suburbs now!).

While sipping away on our toasty beverages, the succulent smell of crabs came out which meant KRABBY EGGS are up! This dish had a mixture of blue swimmer crabs, garlic, ginger, red chilli and curry scrambled eggs. Blue swimmer crab meat sautéed with garlic, ginger, shallots, red chilli and curry scrambled eggs. There were the most AMAZEBALL scrambled eggs I’ve ever had and mumsy bear couldn’t stop eating it. It had an asian influence to it everything was perfectly seasoned with a right balance of flavours. Their signature dish and you definitely won’t be disappointed with this egg-cellent dish.

We also got the photogenic instagrammable burger, the Little Nipper. It consists of a crunchy soft shell crab lightly battered with lettuce, coleslaw and siracha mayo sauce in a mini brioche bun. This was so DELISH!! The buns were so fluffy soft shell crab was lightly battered and wasn’t too crispy. It did however, needed a bit more sauce inside the burger though. Mumsy bear doesn’t eat burgers at all and for her to eat half the burger, you’ve impressed mumsy bear! The chippies came in a mini fryer (SO CUTIE PATOOTIE!) and were very crispy and lightly seasoned with salt. LOVE IT ALL!

The final dish of our brunch date, the pan seared calamari with mixed salad and tartare sauce. I don’t generally enjoy battered, fried food and when I saw the calamari was pan seared, I definitely had to give it a go. these were only slightly seared and so beautiful in flavour. The salad dressing was so subtle and gives you a refreshing hit after eating all the calamari.

Definitely get the Krabby eggs and if you want a boisterous catch up or have some self loving time, Stop 17 can cater for all occasions. With free wifi (cafes are stepping up their games YO!), amazing service, lovable staff and quality food to match, watch out cafes, this one is going to give you a run for your money.
