Supernormal, Melbourne

Before we head out to Trapt for some escapism, we needed to refuel and decided to stop by Supernormal. I’ve been hanging to come here since I’ve been to Cumulus Inc and Cutler & Co and wanted to try out the last baby of the pack.

Since there were only 5 of us, we couldn’t make a booking (need a minimum of 6) so we went super duper early at 5PM (senior citizen time) so we can bag a table. When we were all finally here, the food came rolling out! First up was the raw kingfish with dashi, celery and fresh horseradish. Mr Italian Stallion loved this dish but I don’t really like celery so I wasn’t a fan of this dish.

Kingfish, Dashi, Celery & Fresh Horseradish – $16

Next up was the smoked beef with mustard leaf and clam mayonnaise. When the staff brought this out, we were told to thoroughly mix everything in before we eat it. We did exactly that and boy, was it YUMMILICIOUS! The flavours were AWESOME SAUCE and it was the most popular dish on our table.

Smoked Beef, Mustard Leaf, Clam Mayonnaise – $17

The pork belly salad came out and the pork belly were thinly sliced and I LOVED IT because I didn’t feel fat eating it. The dish as a whole though, it didn’t tickle my fancy and I found it to be quite bland which was a shame.

Cold Pork Belly, Cucumber, Mala Sauce & Fried Garlic – $17

The marinated calamari was next and this was quite lovely! So many flavours and a tad spicy too. I quite enjoyed this dish.

Marinated Calamari, Mussels, Garlic, Pickled Peppers & Korea Chili – $18

Mr Italian Stallion decided to get the pan fried spicy beef bun. It was quite hot when it arrived and recommended by the staff to cut it in half so it cools down. When it was finally ready to eat, it was very spicy and a bit dry. Mr Italian Stallion enjoyed it but I didn’t quite so much.

Pan Fried Spicy Beef Bun – $8

Now, we’ve heard great things about the new england lobster roll so we just had to get it. We were super duper excited and this was AMAZEBALL! Definitely a must try dish here.

With all these food, we’ll need to add in some salad just because. Mr Skivvy LOVED this! I’m not a fan of tofu but the consensus on the table was it was smooth and silky. The tomato salad was DELISH (did not expect that Yo!) and very refreshing, just what we needed.

Tomato Salad, Yuzu Koshu & Silken Tofu – $16

Our last small dish before the mains came out! We had the pan-fried pot stickers and they were pretty average and that was very disappointing. To be honest, there were many places in Melbourne that had better pot stickers for cheaper as well.

Pan Fried Pot Stickers – $14 (5pc)

Finally, it was time for the main courses! First up was the duck bao where half the duck was twice cooked, served with vinegar and plum sauce. The duck was crispy on the outside and a bit dry on the inside. The bao was absolutely AMAZEBALL though. When you pop the duck and plum sauce into the bao and dip it into the vinegar, it was YUMMILICIOUS! LOVE IT!! The duck did look a tad ugly but don’t let looks fool you!

Duck Bao – Twice Cooked Duck, Vinegar & Plum Sauce – $55 (Half Duck)

We were all super full by this stage and you guessed it, the last dish of the night – slow cooked szechuan lamb, spring onion pancake and coriander paste. We didn’t enjoy this dish at all and wasn’t able to finish the lamb so Mr Skivvy took the lamb home. It had a real strong lamb-y taste and it looked more like a stew. The lamb was so tender and did fall off the bone easily. I enjoyed the spring onion pancake though, that was AWESOME!

Slow Cooked Szechuan Lamb, Spring Onion Pancake, Coriander Paste – $39

We wanted to order dessert but due to time constraints we had to leave. However, they gave us complimentary plum and green tea soft serve which was so lovely of them. This was AMAZEBALL and we all were pretty happy about it.

Complimentary Plum and Green Tea Soft Serve

The staff were attentive, the atmosphere was awesome, there were some hit and misses with the food (more hits though) and very customer focused. I would come back here to try out the other things on the menu and you’ve got to try the soft serve and the lobster roll if you drop by.
