Had a badminton session with the girlies and of course a catch up isn’t complete until we stuffed our faces at brunch. We went for the option of ‘what’s the closest brunch place’ and thanks those tech-savvy girlies, we were at the kettle black. Like every other brunch place in Melbourne, the routine was the same, you go up to the front, give them your name and how many people in your crew/gang/squad (whatever you all call them these days) and loiter around in front until a table is free and your name gets called out. We were told it was going to be a wait of 35 minutes but some groups didn’t show up when their names were called so we ended up only waiting for 10 minutes (SCORE!). Also, while you’re waiting in front or want coffee and baked goods, there’s a stall which you can definitely get them from. Anywho, once we were called in and shown to our table, I looked around and it was like I was in a green house with pot plants everywhere. Very adorable I must say.
We were given menus and we all ordered drinkies because we were super duper hungry from all the Olympian badminton playing (that’s right, watch out world). I got the Chai and it was the CUTEST THING EVER in it’s own teapot! Even came with a honey pot instead of sugar (YAYERS!). To top it off, it was YUMMOLICIOUS too!
Chai – $4.50
The others got an iced chocolate and a latte – they didn’t seem to rave on about it like I did so I’m guessing they were jealous of my drink!
Latte – $4; Iced Chocolate – $6
Finally our food came out and everyone by now had no more drinkies (yep, we all gulped it down) and just couldn’t wait! I got the snapper with chili & lime jam with papaya salad in a brioche bun. THIS. WAS. FANTABULOUS! The buns were toasted with a sweetness to them and the snapper was AWESOME! Gosh, when it all mixed in my mouth, heaven opened up and I saw the light.
Snapper with Chili & Lime Jam Brioche – $21
Miss Cookie Monster got the mushrooms (cooked and raw) with a poached egg and fresh goat curd. Miss Cookie asked if they could either cook all the mushrooms or remove it from the dish and they said no, that she was easy enough for her to pick it out herself once the dish came out (that was a bit weird….I’m pretty sure they could have just not put it in…). She wasn’t impressed with the dish at all, in her words “it’s mushrooms…”.
Local Mushrooms with Fresh Goat Curd and Poached Egg – $20
Miss Korea got the Tataki Ocean Trout with raw kale, pickled veggie salad and poached eggs. She thought it too was average.
Ocean Trout with Raw Kale, Pickled Vegetable Salad & Poached Eggs – $20
Finally, Miss Malaysia got the Cape Grim Beef with mustard, seasonal fruit relish on the kettle black bun since she needed meat and pronto. She thought the beef was YUMMO but the relish did’t tickle her fancy. I don’t think she was quite impressed with the black bun either…
Cape Grim Beef with Mustard, Seasonal Fruit Relish on the Kettle Black Bun – $23
All dishes had edible flowers on them which made it look extra pretty and the poached eggs were cooked to perfection. Surprisingly, only I really enjoyed my dish. We went up to the counter to pay and THERE WAS A BOARD OF CAKES!! Honestly, how are we going to stay on our diet with it there *sighs*.
Great atmosphere, lovely service, I thought the food was great but I guess it was only ¼ for YUMMOLICIOUS. It’s a very cute place and if you haven’t been, make this your next brunch date if you enjoy a more healthier brunch option.
