Sea urchin or a.k.a uni is delicacy most known for in Japan. I’ve mostly had it in nigiri or sushi and I jumped at the moment when I found out there was a uni specialty restaurant in town. Located in Glen Waverly off the main road sits a warehouse. You won’t miss it since it has a blown up cartoon sea urchin out front. There won’t be any parking at the venue but there’s ample street parking. Uni Boom Boom has been opened for 5 years selling uni and birds nest direct to the public and they have just opened up their eatery for one year and it provides an opportunity to taste some premium uni.
We were served with popcorn with dehydrated uni sprinkled on top which gave it a lovely hint of saltiness but fancier. We also received a small glass with a pickle, salmon sashimi and roe and it was all so fresh.

Now, I love myself some unagi and when I heard there was an unagi ramen with uni, who could resist? Surely not me. The broth was made with…you guessed it…uni! The flavours were soft and subtle and you can definitely taste the love in it. Now, the eel, my gosh that eel was soft and fluffy and the seasoning was to die for. It was definitely top notch. The fresh uni was creamy, fresh and oh so good. With everything mixed together, it was salty, it was fresh, it was loving and it was something I did not want to share.

Wagyu lovers, the wagyu and uni don is for you. A bed of rice topped with delish wagyu, uni and an egg yolk, this is oh so feeling. Mix up everything and my gosh it was awesome sauce. The uni was oh so creamy and fresh and that wagyu *drools*.

The night finished with some…you guessed it…uni coffee. I’ve never had it either and it was definitely a new experience for me. Dehydrated uni sprinkled over the coffee, buttered uni and salmon roe. All very different things to put in a coffee but mix it all in and your coffee becomes sweet and salty at the same time. Definitely an experience.

Uni Boom Boom serves up fresh and premium uni and they’re serving it in ways you wouldn’t even imagine. Come for the delectable dishes and you can even purchase bird nest and uni to bring home. If like me you weren’t a huge a fan of uni, this place will surely change your mind.
