Straits Cafe, Wantirna South

After exploring Ikea with Miss Chanel (soon to be Mrs), we stopped by Straits Cafe for her Malaysian fix. Located on Stud Road, there are ample parking and of course, it’s free parking too. We arrived there at on a Wednesday night and it was close to closing but there were still heaps of people around. We quickly ordered and our food came quick smart.

We got the lobak to share and it was light and fluffy but it was super oily. Miss Chanel loved it and could not stop herself from eating it all. I on the other hand, thought it was quite average.

Lobak (10pc) – $9.50
Chicken rolls wrapped in beancurd skin, lightly fried, served with a special sauce

Miss Chanel got the char kueh teow and it was smokey and chary and it was full of flavour. This was not oily at all and it was definitely comfort food.

Penang Char Kueh Teow – $12.50
Malaysian hawker style stir fried flat noodles with prawn, squid, chinese sausage, fishcake, egg & beanshoots

I got the Har Mee and for those who do not like the fishy taste, this has a super mega duper fishy taste due to the prawns being cooked in the soup. I’m more use to coconut based laksa so this wasn’t tickling my fancy at all. Yep, too fishy for me.

Penang Har Mee – $11.50
Authentic hawker style rice vermicelli & egg noodles served in prawn soup with sliced pork, prawns & egg

The service here is quick, the prices are reasonable (by reasonable I mean cheap) and there were a few hit and misses for me. I will be returning to try their coconut based laksa since I wasn’t able to satisfy my cravings.
