Phi Phi 2, St Albans

It was Peppa Pig and A-Baby’s birthday so we decided to do a joint party and had dinner at Phi Phi 2. Phi Phi (the original one) is a Vietnamese eatery in St Albans and since they were popular, they decided to open a second store which consists of kbbq with with a Vietnamese twist to it. Peppa Pig’s mum made a booking at 5:30PM and we arrived and was seated at a big table.

They had the whole set up like they do at a K-BBQ eatery and that was quite impressive. The interior decor was modern and very cool looking, different to what you would find in St Albans. There was also a box under the table so you could put your stuff in there while you enjoy all them meaty goodness.

The staff told us that the cocktails were their signature drinkies so we decided to have cocktails / mocktails to get the party started. Mr Kingdom Hearts was driving so he opted for a mocktail and I had forgotten which one he got but it was the strawberry one and it was very sweet.

I wanted to try the lychee cocktail but all I could taste was just soho in it and nothing else.

Mr D got the Mango Daiquiri and all he could taste was alcohol….He was driving so he passed it on to me and like the lychee one, there wasn’t any other flavours except for the hint of mangoes and straight up alcohol.

We also got two salads to share among ourselves but we found that the sauces were exactly the same and it was just straight up spicy with a strong sourness to it but with different meats – beef or calamari. None of us enjoyed the salads.

They also had jap chae and I couldn’t say no to that since I absolutely adore japchae. When this came out I was super duper excited. However, that excitement stopped there. The noodles itself were dry and bland and didn’t have any of the sesame flavour at all.

With each BBQ set you get dipping sauce and again, not the traditional korean one but it wasn’t my cup of tea either. It tasted like lemongrass and the peanut sauce one was not peanutty at all which was disappointing. I didn’t use any of the dips which was a shame.

There was a large selection of meats but they all had the same marinade and the staff sometimes didn’t cook it through either so we had to throw it back onto the BBQ and do it ourselves.

I did like one dish, it was the beef wrapped in cheese (obviously because the cheese was there) and I think it was the laughing cow cheese. This was AMAZEBALL!

The staff tried to be as helpful as they can except everytime they tried to cook something for us, they wriggle inbetween us and stood right there cooking it while we had to awkwardly sit and accommodate them which I think is something that they could improve in. When they changed the grill, they got a new one, shoved it on top and flipped it over. That’s fine except they did it almost on top of us which meant we were the receiving end of the oil (ewww). It does get busy at night and on weekends so if you do want to check this place out, remember to make a booking. Sorry Phi Phi 2 but your service and food isn’t something that will make us rushing to come back.
