Pho Dzung City Noodle Shop, Melbourne

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is in full swing and the work gang and I dropped by and had a few (more like a plethora) of giggles and of course need to refuel ourselves. Mr and Mrs Tequila really wanted to have Vietnamese so we stopped at Pho Dzung on Miss Mousey’s recommendation. We ventured in and grabbed a table by the front and the dishes weren’t even cleared up yet and they didn’t even clear it up until we kept hassling them (seriously guys?). Anywho, they gang let me order everything and I decided to go for the popular Vietnamese dishes! First up, the drinkies. I got the Vietnamese ice coffee (ca phe sua da) and the jackfruit smoothie. The guys loved the ice coffee since it was sweet and they commented it was a tad strong for them. The Jackfruit smoothie had jackfruit chunks and it was super sweet. No one enjoyed the jackfruit smoothie which was a shame.

Jackfruit Smoothie – $4; Ice White Coffee – $3.50

Everyone loves themselves some springrolls and lucky Miss Teacher chose the dish and got the prawn ones (10 points to Gryffindor!). It was super crunchy but not a lot of prawns though.

Prawn Springrolls (10pc) – $10

Of course we couldn’t go to a Pho place and not have….well PHO! I got the sliced beef one. The beef were pretty good, quite tender and served medium rare (just the way I like them) but the broth was quite bland. Luckily for me, these were pho first timers.

Rare Sliced Beef Pho (small) – $9.50

We got the broken rice which comes with fish sauce, shredded pork, grilled pork chop and a fried egg. This was quite disppointing since I’ve been to a few Vietnamese restaurants and you usually get a lot more meats and even mixed meats (cha). The flavours of the dish was okay, not as bland as the pho and the fish sauce puts the cherry on top.

Broken Rice – $10.50

Finally, Mrs Tequila had her eyes on the Vietnamese Prawn Salad. They were quite generous with the prawns which was definitely a plus. Mixing everything together with the fish sauce, it was pretty top notch.

Vietnamese Prawn Salad – $9.90

The service here wasn’t great, we had to constantly ask them to clean the table and they didn’t even acknowledge us when we walked in. The food was very average and I wouldn’t be coming back any time soon.
