The Post Hotel, St Kilda

The Post Hotel in St Kilda has been around for a while (140 years to be exact) and with the new owners on board, it has been revamped. Old looking pub on the outside, modern and stylish on the inside. The chef is from a hatted restaurant (Longrain) and most of the dishes had an asian influence to it.

Mr D and I went for the booths since I love my butt to always be comfy. We got entrees first and I picked the grilled Harvey Bay Scallops with corn puree and crispy prosciutto and truffle oil. The scallops were wonderful, so plump and fresh and the corn puree great. However, I didn’t like the crispy prosciutto because it was way too hard and I was struggling to bite through it (Damn these grandma teeth).

We also got the salt and pepper calamari which was lightly battered with sweet soy dressing. I LOVED THIS ENTREE!! The calamari wasn’t too oily and the dressing was amazing! Totally recommend this dish if you come by here.

Next up was my main, the pan seared ocean trout with charred fennel. This was AMAZEBALL! The trout was seared to medium rare (the way I like it) and the charred fennel was so mouth wateringly good. I did remove the red onions though…(don’t want to be stinky whilst on the date). This dish was THE BOMB. However, I did find 3 bones in my trout which I alerted the waitstaff and they were apologetic.

Mr D got the Chicken Parmigiana because that’s a staple when you go to a pub. He LOVED it! The chicken wasn’t dry at all and the sauce wasn’t too overpowering. Luckily for him, I was so considerate that I only took one bite of it!

Now, the important part of the meal…DESSERT! I was hanging to try out the Vanilla bean panna cotta with berries and pineapple sorbet. I was really disappointed with it. The panna cotta was too firm and dense and did not wobble at all (I CAME FOR THE WOBBLINESS!!!). I quite liked the sorbet as it was very refreshing. The garnish on the dessert, I didn’t quite understand it and I just moved it to the side inconspicuously.

Mr D got the house made doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce. The doughnuts were too filling and I would have rather it be more hollow. The chocolate dipping sauce was on the bitter side and we didn’t enjoy this either…sigh. I think it would have been nicer if the chocolate sauce was more on the sweeter side and it came with a scoop of ice cream.

I loved the casual-ness of the place, the beautiful interior, the attentiveness of the staff and especially the entree and mains. If you’re hanging for desserts, maybe try the house made sorbet or the cheese platter. It’s a great place for drinks or grab a bite and it was also family friendly (YAY!! Come on down babies!).
